Squat lekythos

Shape_description

The shape is nearly identical to that of a smaller lekythos from the Pantanello Necropolis at Metaponto, published by M. Elliott in Carter 1998, 2.684-85 SL10 (T 128-3), although the ribbing is more akin to that found on Pantanello SL9 (T 126-9). Cf. also Sicilian examples from Agrigento (especially AG 1331: de Miro 1962, 137, fig. 41c). See also 'comments' below.

Decoration

Cup mouth with slightly out-turned rim and flat lip; narrow neck, bulbous body, broad raised base, and strap handle rising from the top of the neck, extending to the top of the body in a near right-angled shape. A slight ridge marks the join of neck and body. The body is decorated with 9 pairs of vertical grooves giving the appearance of a 'segmented orange'. Black glazed except on base, which is reserved and treated with red wash.
