Shape Kantharos
Shape_description Kalathos-shaped body, with a flaring rounded rim, to the top of which are attached the looped ends of a pair of strap handles, concave on their exterior surfaces; the tubular ends of the loops rejoin the middle of each handle, and below the bottom of each handle, attached at the bottom of the cup, is a spur. Below a carination, the bottom of the cup narrows to a nearly cylindrical stem, ridged at the center, below which it widens, and smoothly curves into the top of a moulded foot, with three ridges, of increasing diameter, on the exterior surface. Within the narrow resting surface is a concave underside, with a conical hollow at centre.

Decoration Interior and handles black, as are the lower part of the body, stem, and upper surface of foot. Reserved band around rim, interrupted on either side by handles. Reserved vertical band in each handle zone; on each side a female head, profile to the left, between two white vertical bands, each crowned by a circle near the top of the band; red diagonal surface of foot; reserved underside including resting surface. Each female wears a stephane and a sakkos from which emerges a bundle of hair, also tied with a white ribbon; earring comprised of triangular element (missing from side B) beneath hoop; beaded necklace The figure on side B has a fleur-de-lys in the lower left field. The surface is ruddled on both heads and the exterior of the foot; added yellow, in places ‘gilded’ with yellow, for details of hair ornament, jewelry, and fleur-de-lys.
Inscriptions
Condition Missing two chips from the base, and cracked on the underside; glaze dulled in places and cracking around the handle attachments; light grey deposits on side B; added colour very well preserved.

Attribution Trendall and Cambitoglou, 2.1014 and 2.1015.906-907, class this kantharos, as well as Reading RM.87.35.23, as 'associated in style with the Kantharos Group'.
