Shape Lid
Shape_description Short cylindrical knob, flat-topped and double-recessed in centre. The short concave stem connects the cylinder to the short domed lid, in a continuous curve. Beyond a gouge the outer 1.8 cm of the lid becomes slightly concave and after two ridges terminates in a slightly rounded edge.The underside is hollowed just below the knob, and has a short flange intended to sits inside the rim of the pyxis to which it would have belonged.

Munsell_color 7.5YR 7/6
Decoration Decorated with streaky black glaze, which becomes dark red in placces. Knob black glazed on exterior of two recesses, side, and underside, as well as stem and inner part of domed top. Beyond this a frieze of 9-leaf palmettes alternating with water birds, profile to the left, with intervening spots between palmettes and swan. This frieze is surrounded by a band of vertical bars between two glazed bands. The underside is reserved.
Inscriptions
Condition Intact and complete except for two chips on the rim. The top of the knob has a crack across the middle, leading to a hole in the deeper recess. The surface is worn, with cracks to the glaze surrounding the attachment of the knob and white deposits throughout the decoration. Yellow deposits on the underside of the lid, just outside the flange.
