Shape_description

Tall cylindrical neck offset from a squat body, with a curved shoulder, flange below the shoulder, concave side walls (offset at top and bottom), and a broader ring base, curved on the upper surface, with a broad resting surface, offset, slightly concave underside. From the front of the neck extends diagonally a tubular spout, squared at the end. From the back of the spout rises a high curving strap handle, rounded on the outside, which arches in a rectangular form, and descends sharply towards the lower part of the shoulder; which bends back on itself to attach to mouth and at the back to the lower part of the shoulder. Two moulded male heads, bearded, are found on either side of the upper handle attachment.

Decoration

Entirely black, except reserved on the inside of the spout and the underside including resting surface, and red figure decoration: line at middle of neck; ray band at lowest part of neck, above dots; figural scene between two sideways palmettes, enclosed, from the outside bottom of each emerges tendrils; short ray band at interior of lower handle attachment; 10-leaf palmette at exterior of lower handle attachment; flange decorated with egg-and-dot band, beneath a black line; the sides are decorated with an ivy design, effected through incision (tendrils) and added white (leaves). Reserved line band just below join of body and foot. The figural scene on the shoulder depicts seated youth seated profile to the right, facing a woman, seated profile to the right, but turning profile to the left. The youth, nude except for a hairband, sits on drapery, alongside which he hangs his left arm, and reaches a wreath, held in his left hand, towards the woman; she, wearing a crenellated stephane and a belted chiton, is seated perhaps on a cushion (comprised of dots), helds her right arm, slightly lowered, towards the wreath, and holds a box in her slightly raised left hand. A four-petal rosette is beneath her right arm.

Attribution

A.C. Smith prefers to attribute this vase to the Zaandam Group or one the other workshops of the Iliupersis Painter and the followers of the Hoppin Painter, who specialised in small, plain style pots. For comparanda in the Zaandam Group, 'closely connected' to the work of the Zaandam Painter (according to Cambitoglou and Trendall, RVAp 1.289) see Adolphseck 175-176 (RVAp 11/30-31) and Once London Market, Folio Fine Art (RVAp 1.32). I. McPhee prefers the Liverpool Group: for shape and ornament cf. Naples 669 (RVAp 2, 21/355a) and Wellcome R 1936.324 (RVAp 2, 21/372a) but figures are more akin to the latter, which is classed in group (iv). The white ivy wreath, with incised stems, on the body, is particularly common in this group, and especially well preserved on Dresden H 4. 29/90 (RVAp 2, 21/369).
