Lekanis with lid

Shape_description

Lid: tall, conical, flat-topped knob on a sharply sloping conical lid, with plain rim, vertical profile, flat underside, leading to a short flange (0.3) to sit within lekanis. Lekanis: slightly everted, rounded rim with flat lip, on a deep bowl with straight walls in two parts, separated by a sharp carination near the bottom, attached to a short disk foot, angled on inside and out, with a slightly convex underside. From either side of the rim extends a semicircular horizontal handle, round in section, that rises very slightly, flanked by short pointed spurs or lugs on either side of the handle.

Decoration

Lid: glazed black, except for the underside. At the middle of the lid are two purlish-red narrow bands; a third narrow band surrounds the rim of the lid. Lekanis: glazed black, except for the underside. Interior decorated with a purplish-red band high up the outer wall, and two red bands in the bowl; exterior decorated also with three purplish-red bands, two higher up and one lower on the outer wall.

Condition

Lid intact and complete except for a large chip missing from the rim. Lekanis comprised of three or more rejoined pieces, rejoined with some plaster restorations, preserving one handle, most of the foot, and approximately 2/3 of the body of the bowl. The surface on both parts is somewhat worn, with whitish-gray patches, chips and scratches, and some black glaze eroded.
