Shape_description

High, curved, thick, black handle which bends back on itself to attach to mouth and at the back to the lower part of the shoulder. At the mouth attachment are two moulded heads; spout has central channel and two ridges at moulded rim. The cylindrical neck becomes bell shaped in its lower part, and a ridge marks its attachment to the shoulder, which is slightly concave. Beyond the handle attachment is a flat rim, offset from the shoulder and, more sharply, from the body beneath it, which is upright but slightly convex. The very short ring foot, with broad resting surface, is as broad as the rim around the shoulder.

Decoration

Entirely black, except reserved on the underside, and the resting surface. Red figure decoration begins at the lower part of the neck, with a band of rays, in imitation of ribbing. The shoulder has palmettes, rosettes and circles with central dots with added white. Wave on rim. Body decorated with white: chevrons between dot rosettes. Red band on lowest part of body, above foot.

Egg and Wave Group

Attribution

A.C. Smith. The lotus bud is quite unusual, and this and other decorative elements relate this epichysis to the Egg and Wave Group, a workshop that specialised in small vases and was related to he Iliupersis Painter. There is also a slight resemblance to the work of the Lampas Group, followers of the plain style: cf. Scottsdale, Cutler Collection (RVAp 11/206a). Although no other epichyses have been attributed to this group/artist, the group seems to represent the work of a versatile artist, influenced by the Truro and Lecce Painters and associates, who favored smaller vases, specialising in single figures, often animals, surrounded by ornament of the type shown on this epichysis, especially tendrils, buds, and bulls-eyes, with large added white dots. Cf. especially Karlsruhe B 938 (RVAp 10/232) and New London, Lyman Allyn Museum 1955.1.83 (RVAp 10/234).
